Nature Positive Brisbane Catchments project at Greenslopes DCP
2025 is the beginning of a major project at the upstream end of the Greenslopes DCP bushcare site. The project is supported largely by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program through funding obtained by Brisbane Catchments Network. It will transform a key reach of Norman Creek in upper Greenslopes, running until early 2028.
This site is very weedy and was identified as a priority in N4C’s Habitat Restoration Action Plan. Controlling weeds here will decrease the weed pressure on the DCP (Demonstration Catchment Project) site and increase its habitat value overall.
A diversity of local native tree and understorey species will be planted, including koala food trees and flying fox food trees. These two species are threatened, but are likely to be able to utilize the site. For instance, a koala was observed in a nearby property in a Eucalyptus tree. The favoured vegetation types of these threatened species will also support a number of other local native animals.
While the project will involve removal of weedy vegetation in the first phase, planting of native species will start at the end of the following flood season. Activities will be carefully timed to avoid negative impacts of flooding. A glimpse of the possible future of the site is provided by the small strip of eucalypts along the upstream edge, planted experimentally by the local bushcare group in 2017.
The removal of weeds will facilitate the survival, fruiting, flowering and germination of native plants, including threatened flora, and provide food and shelter for threatened fauna. Tree weeds at the site are occupying a large space, and it is worth removing them to allow native species to flourish.
Nature Positive Brisbane Catchments is a Brisbane-wide project, involving eight catchment groups in Brisbane and other project partners.
